Gippsland

Vast, tranquil and diverse, Gippsland is renowned for its striking natural beauty. From unspoilt beaches and shimmering waterways, to lush forests, towering peaks and rolling green hills, the region is a rich tapestry of ever changing landscapes.

Places to stay

Discover the picturesque coastal and mountain villages dotted throughout the region. Once one of Australia's richest Gold Rush towns, Walhalla offers visitors a glimpse of that history with its well-preserved heritage town centre and Walhalla Goldfield Railway. Buchan is a great base from which to see the nearby spectacular underground limestone caves and Mt Baw Baw is a popular destination for winter snow sports and summer wildflowers.

On the coast, Mallacoota is renowned for its mild weather and proximity to the magnificent wilderness of the Croajingolong National Park. Bairnsdale is a small centre that is close to the Gippsland Lakes, Mitchell River, mountains and forests and Sale is a major centre and an historic port with a regional art gallery.

Aquatic wonders

Gippsland encompasses unique National Parks, Australia's largest group of inland waterways, one of the world's longest unspoilt beaches, silt jetties, marine wildlife havens and a UNESCO World Biosphere reserve.

Wilsons Promontory National Park takes in the southernmost point of the Australian mainland and includes pure white quartz beaches backed by beautiful granite cliffs. The Gippsland Lakes system extends over 600 square kilometres and is separated from the ocean by coastal dunes known as Ninety Mile Beach. Bird and marine life thrive here, with lake dolphins and pelicans frequenting many locations. Undoubtedly one of Australia's most spectacular parks, Croajingolong National Park encompasses 100 kilometres of coast and hinterland. It has been recognised for its extraordinary diversity of landscapes that supports a diverse range of flora and fauna.
